Well Infant, Child, and Adolescent Checkups

Wellness Checkups are routine examinations used to monitor the overall health and development of your child. These exams assess factors such as disease risks, immunization, growth, and nutrition along with physical and mental development. Wellness visits help ensure the healthy growth of your child as well as screening to catch potential problems as early as possible. Children under two years of age should get a checkup every few months. Children over two years of age should be seen annually. You should schedule wellness visits for your child around the following ages:

  • 1 month
  • 2 months
  • 4 months
  • 6 months
  • 9 months
  • 12 months (1 year)
  • 15 months
  • 18 months
  • 24 months (2 years)
  • Then once every year for physical exams, developmental, behavioral, and learning assessments.

Some wellness visits require specific tests, though we will always check your child’s height, weight, hearing, vision, and general health as part of every checkup. We believe that Preventative Care is the most important tool for keeping your child healthy and happy.

Immunizations are required to protect your child from diseases or, at least, give them the ability to fight off certain diseases and make the effects less harmful. Many immunizations are in the form of vaccinations, which are small numbers of weakened or killed viruses that cause disease. Through exposure, your child’s own immune system is bolstered against future exposure to the live virus. The critical vaccines as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics include:

  • Hepatitis B
  • Pneumococcal conjugate vaccine
  • Measles, mumps, rubella
  • Chickenpox
  • Diphtheria, tetanus, acellular pertussis
  • Hepatitis A
  • HPV

We provide these immunizations to be given at the specified ages for your child and will be happy to review the advantages and risks of each. While infants are normally protected from some diseases at birth due to immunities passed on by the mother, this protection is only temporary and must be reinforced for the child to remain protected.

Developmental Screening

Developmental screenings are simple diagnostic procedures in which the child is asked certain questions during a routine checkup. The purpose of these tests is to ensure your child is progressing at a normal rate or identify potential delays in their overall development. These procedures play a major role in identifying developmental conditions early so treatment can begin as soon as possible.

Developmental screenings help us detect conditions such as attention deficit disorder (ADD/ADHD), autism, mental retardation, and more. Detecting such conditions early is the most important way to prevent further damage and compounding problems.

Behavioral Consultations

Behavioral Consultations allow our doctors to assess your child’s behavior patterns through interviews and observation. Consults are most commonly for school age children, though they can be performed at any age. Our staff will review your child’s social interactions and natural responses in order to identify problems that may be detrimental to your child’s success and development.

We also work with family members to promote understanding and encouragement for your child while developing a treatment plan suited for his or her individual needs. We strive to council parents on how to better deal with troublesome situations and discover solutions to help the child prevent further occurrences.
